15 APRIL 2012

2nd SUNDAY OF EASTER

COMMUNISM VS. CATHOLICISM

Yes they do have many common points.  Today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles spells out one.  “No one claimed for their own use what they had, as everything they owned was held in common”.  This motivation encouraged the birth of many religious groupings in the Church and it flourishes still in religious orders and societies.  It is more difficult in such large bodies as parishes.  But wait.  It does!  During Lent we have generously contributed to Caritas.  52 weeks of the year the Society of St Vincent de Paul continues to reach out to those in need.  The Catholic community sacrifices much time and finance to enable children and young people to receive a good education in the faith.  Countless acts of kindness are performed each day throughout our parishes.  Yes there is some good communist activity going on in the Church.  But the radical difference is that Christ is the focus of all our activity.  All we do is done through him, in him and with him.  It is in the power of the risen Christ that we are connected to one another.  We are Easter People.  Alleluia!

RECOGNIZING A STROKE  Doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

  1. Ask the individual to SMILE.
  2. Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

3    Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (coherently) (i.e. It is sunny out today).

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 111 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

GOING INTO HOSPITAL?  If you are admitted to hospital and desire a visit from the Chaplain, it is necessary to fill in this part of  the hospital form, for a visit to be ensured.

If you do not tick the ‘yes’ box and also state religion the Chaplain will not know you are in hospital.  This must be done each time you are admitted, as the system does not carry this information from one admission to the next.  Patients or relatives should not hesitate to ask staff to contact the Chaplain.  You are also welcome to contact the Catholic Chaplain at the hospital on 878 8109, extension 2718 – please leave a message or contact the Parish Office.

BEQUESTS  Occasionally we are notified by a lawyer that a parishioner wishes to leave a bequest to our Parish.  Such donations have been left to the Parish Priest and Pastoral Council to use wisely for the benefit of our faith community.  Have you ever thought of this when you make or adjust your will?
